Explore Cuba with Yale GALA itinerary front cover

Upcoming trip: Explore Cuba with Yale GALA! (everyone’s welcome)

This May, I’ll be leading a trip for Yale GALA, the LGBT alumni association of Yale University! It’ll be a very special trip… in part because we’re so well connected there. You don’t have to be a Yalie, or LGBT – everyone’s welcome.

You’ll find all the print information below: The condensed brochure with reservation form, plus a larger brochure with more detailed itinerary.

To register for the trip, visit http://www.yaleedtravel.org/GALACuba16

Executive Summary:

I designed the intinerary – and it’s good. Expert lectures by Professors George Chauncey and Ron Gregg. Strong emphasis on LGBT life in Cuba. Timed to coincide with Cuba’s 2016 Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. Register soon – as we expect the trip to fill fast, probably by the end of February.

Pricing:

$5765 double occupancy; $1310 single supplement.

Trip highlights:

  • Take part in Cuba’s events for the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia
  • Visit CENESEX, the National Center for Sexual Education and Cuba’s leading voice for LGBT rights and inclusion (Director Mariela Castro plans to join us if available)
  • Visit the LGBT beach Mi Cayito with some of the activists who fought to make it theirs
  • Pilgrimages to sites featured in Strawberry and Chocolate, the Oscar-nominated film about being gay in Cuba. Leading lady Mirta Ibarra is a friend of Ron! We’ve asked her to join us for dinner one night at a restaurant featured in the film.
  • Discussion of trans themes in recent Cuban films
  • Optional evening outings to queer spaces, including queer women’s spaces
  • All obligatory stops in Havana, such as Old Havana with all its crazy contrasts; Revolution Square; the malecón; and La Rampa, the gayest street in Cuba
  • Cultural events with some of Havana’s hottest musicians, dancers, and artists
  • Staying at one of Havana’s best hotels and eating at some of its top restaurants

Legalese and disclaimers:

  • This is a People-to-People educational exchange program. Program participants are authorized to travel to Cuba under a general license under Section 515.565(b) of the Cuban Assets Control Regulations, traveling under the auspices of Detours With Matt.
